ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

Elementary schools all participate in the Alabama Reading Initiative Program, Accelerated Reader Program, and the Step Up to Writing Program. All have elementary physical education programs taught by certified physical education teachers. They all have Honors Programs and music programs. They each have a school nurse on campus throughout the school day and are accredited by SACS.

HIGH SCHOOLS

High schools offer comprehensive courses of study ranging from basic and remedial courses to honors courses as well as dual enrollment courses. These comprehensive courses include a foreign language (Spanish or French), and advanced courses in all subjects including computer science. Students are given the opportunity to refine their skills in Fine Arts through music and drama programs. All high schools are SACS accredited.

TECHNOLOGY AND RELATED PROGRAMS

In each high school, a computer applications lab offers students the opportunity to work on Microsoft applications. In the Career and Technical Center, a Cisco Networking class as well as a CompTIA A+ class is offered to students who enjoy learning IT skills. Every classroom in the Houston County School System has at least one computer workstation for student use and most have two or more with high speed internet access. A wireless WAN is in place to insure secure and efficient data transfer from school to school and the central office. Odyssey Learning labs are in use in the elementary schools for remediating and reinforcing basic and advanced skills.

FEDERAL PROGRAMS
Houston County Schools also have a comprehensive range of programs in place to serve special student populations. Each school has certified teachers who work with students who have a wide range of exceptionalities and handicaps. Students are, in most cases, integrated into the regular classrooms through inclusion programs. A gifted program is also in place to serve those students who are talented academically and have shown special abilities in specific areas. At-Risk students who have difficulty functioning in a traditional school environment have the option of attending Hope High School if they qualify. Hope High School is a self-paced academic program administered in a computer assisted, independent study environment.
