General Information |
| Houston County Schools serve approximately 6450 students in southeastern Alabama. The system consists of two K-12 schools, one K-5 school, two K-6 schools, one 6-8 school, two 7-12 schools, one 9-12 school, a Career and Technical Center that serves all 9-12 students, and one Alternative School. Houston County Schools employs approximately 725 professional and support personnel with an operating budget of $54 million. Houston County School system is a separate system from Dothan City School system (Dothan is the largest city in Houston County). Houston County borders Georgia to the east and Florida to the south and ranks 14th in population among Alabama counties. |
| Elementary |
| Elementary schools all participate in the Alabama Reading Initiative Program, Accelerated Reader Program, and the Step Up to Writing Program. All have Elementary Physical Education programs taught by certified Physical Education teachers. They all have Honors Programs and music programs. They each have a school nurse on campus throughout the school day and are accredited by SACS. |
| High Schools |
| High Schools offer comprehensive courses of study ranging from basic and remedial courses to Honors Courses and dual enrollment programs. These comprehensive courses include a foreign language (Spanish or French), and advanced courses in all subjects including Computer Science. Students are given the opportunity to refine their skills in the Fine Arts through music and drama programs. All high schools are SACS accredited. |
| Technology and Related Programs |
| In each high school, a computer applications lab offers students the opportunity to work on Microsoft applications. In the Career and Technical Center, a Cisco Networking class as well as a CompTIA A+ class is offered to students who enjoy learning IT skills. Every classroom in the Houston County School System has at least one computer workstation for student use and most have 2 or more with high speed internet access. A wireless WAN is in place to insure secure and efficient data transfer from school to school and the central office. Odyssey Learning labs are in use in the elementary schools for reinforcing and remediating basic and advanced skills. |
| Federal Programs |
Houston County Schools also have a comprehensive range of programs in place to serve special student populations. Each school has certified teachers who work with students who have a wide range of exceptionalities and handicaps. Students are, in most cases, integrated into the regular classrooms through inclusion programs. A gifted program is also in place to serve those students who are talented academically and have shown special abilities in specific areas. At-Risk students who have difficulty functioning in a traditional school environment have the option of attending Hope High School if they qualify. Hope High School is a self-paced academic program administered in a computer based, independent study environment. |

It is the official policy of the Houston County Board of Education, that no person in the Houston County Schools System shall, on the grounds of race, color, handicap, sex, religion, creed, national origin, or age, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program, activity, or employment. |
