Webb Elementary School is a K-6 school located in Webb, AL, which is about 5 miles east of Dothan, AL and about 12 miles from the Alabama-Georgia border. There are approximately 490 students attending WES. The staff consists of 28 teachers, 1 counselor, 1 reading coach, 1 music teacher, 2 administrators, and 17 support staff.
Webb Elementary School participates in several programs that enrich the curriculum each year. One such program is Accelerated Reader in which students are encouraged to read books on their level and then take tests to determine comprehension. Every grade level has set a goal of points for each semester and must also maintain an 85% average. At the end of each semester, students that reach their goal are treated to a field trip. This incentive helps to motivate students to read. Research shows that the more children read, the better readers they will be.
Another incentive that WES provides for students is "perfect attendance" awards. All students that maintain perfect attendance for an entire nine weeks qualifies for the drawing for a girls and boys bicycle. Students that are in school do better than those who have excessive absences. Through this program, we hope to encourage students to be in school everyday.
The high academic and physical achievement of students at WES is recognized each year. An honors program is held, in which students that maintained all A's and A/B's are presented with a T-shirt and a plaque. The National Elementary Honor Society recognized students in fifth and sixth grades that have exhibited excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Responsibility and Service. Students can excel in other areas such as the Scripps Spelling Bee, Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge, the Run Across America Jogging Club, and Climbing for Fitness.
At WES, students are encouraged to be good citizens through the Project Wisdom readings. Each morning, a student reads to the entire student body a message that promotes good character education along with the school's Mission Statement. Students are also selected to raise the flag each day. Students from each class receive the Student of the Week Award. These students receive a pencil, a certificate and a snack.
WES is also very involved in helping our community and charitable organizations. This year we have selected several groups to assist: The St. Jude Math-A-Thon, Salvation Army Holiday Canned Food Drive, Spirit of Service Day, and Jump Rope for Heart. We feel it is important for our students to be charitable toward others.
